This hole can be made larger or smaller. It&#8217;s like a faucet that controls how much water comes through, depending on how wide you open it. A wide aperture lets more light enter.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some other details you should know about your lens and aperture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Diaphragm Ring<\/strong>: The aperture is controlled by a ring within your lens. Every conventional lens has this ring. (Catadioptric or &#8220;mirror&#8221; telephoto lenses have a fixed aperture.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>F-Number<\/strong>:\u00a0The <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/understanding-fstops-stops-in-photography-exposure\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">f-number<\/a> describes how large the aperture is. Larger numbers mean a smaller opening (narrow aperture). Smaller numbers mean larger openings (wide aperture). A large aperture is f\/1.8, while f\/22 is considered small.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lenses<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/best-cheap-prime-lens\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Prime lenses<\/a> always have the widest apertures. They can be as large as f\/0.85! The largest aperture available on <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/best-standard-zoom-lenses\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">zoom lenses<\/a> is f\/2.8.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exposure Value<\/strong>: Aperture is one of three settings that controls <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/exposure-value\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exposure value<\/a>. For any given amount of light, there is an exposure value. You combine the <a href=\"https:\/\/camerareviews.com\/aperture-shutter-speed-iso\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">three elements of exposure<\/a> to provide the right amount of light for your photo. Aperture is one element. Understanding the effects of aperture is essential for getting the most out of your photography.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that, for this discussion, an aperture of f\/2.8 is considered a wide aperture (large). You need this aperture setting or even larger to achieve some of the effects we discuss.<\/p>\n\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Depth_of_Field_With_Wide_Apertures\"><\/span>Depth of Field With Wide Apertures<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>When you focus your camera, you, of course, choose a subject to focus on. This, for example, could be a person in a portrait photo. One main effect of your aperture is how much is focused in front and behind the <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/focal-points\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">focal point<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A wide aperture produces a <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/20-tips-shallow-depth-of-field\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shallow depth of field<\/a>. This makes only the main subject sharp. And the area in front and behind the subject is out of focus. This means a large aperture is perfect for <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/emphasis-in-photography\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">isolating your subject using focus<\/a>. This area is often referred to by photographers as <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/beautiful-bokeh-effect-photography\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bokeh<\/a>. Wide apertures help create this bokeh effect.<\/p>\n<p>But not all lenses create bokeh equally. This is why reviews often mention the quality of bokeh produced by a lens. The best examples paint a smooth, creamy background that doesn&#8217;t distract.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible to do even more with bokeh. You can create <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/how-to-create-custom-bokeh-effect\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shaped bokeh<\/a> like hearts, stars, or electric bolts. You cut a black circle from some paper to do this. You then cut the shape you desire into the black circle and ensure it is in the center of your black paper disc. But modern cameras perform extraordinary things with high ISOs. And this makes a fast lens less important.<\/p>\n<p>Ting said, you&#8217;ll often struggle for light without a large aperture, especially when it comes to <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/15-tips-night-street-photography\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">night street photography<\/a>. A large aperture allows enough light to enter the camera even with a fast shutter speed.<\/p>\n<p>Action photography often means <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/complete-guide-sports-photography-87-tips\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sports photography<\/a>, which makes using a wide aperture tricky. That&#8217;s due to the shallow <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/understanding-depth-of-field-photography\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">depth of field<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0because the main subject is moving. You will often need to be moving the camera as well.<\/p>\n<p>Even with modern autofocus (AF) systems, this can make it difficult to get the focus right. But your image looks amazing when you get the focus right with a large aperture.<\/p>\n<p>Get to know your camera&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/where-to-focus-when-taking-a-photo\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">focus-tracking<\/a> function. This means an aperture of f\/16 or smaller. It should be noted that you wouldn&#8217;t normally use an aperture this small for <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/landscape-photography-guide-and-tips\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landscape photos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the lens, the sharpest focus is usually achieved at f\/8 or f\/11. The following are ways in which narrow apertures can benefit your photography.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Depth_of_Field_With_a_Narrow_Aperture\"><\/span>Depth of Field With a Narrow Aperture<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you want elements in the <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/foreground-middleground-background\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">foreground and background<\/a> of your photo to be in focus, you need to use a narrow aperture. All other things being equal, <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/best-wide-angle-lens\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">wide-angle lenses<\/a> have a greater depth of field than <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/best-telephoto-lens\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">telephotos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The effect of this narrow aperture is a large depth of field, with most areas of the photo being in focus. This is due to lens construction. But if there are strong foreground elements that you want to be in focus, then a narrower aperture is needed.<\/p>\n<p>Focusing on an object very close to the camera, even using a small aperture, might not be enough to keep the background sharp. In that case, <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/bracketing-photography\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bracketing<\/a> your images for focus is an option.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/using-focus-stacking-correctly\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Focus-stacked images<\/a> can then correct focus problems in post-processing. It causes a point of light to have spikes.<\/p>\n<p>The type of diaphragm your lens has will affect the number of spikes produced. If the diaphragm has an even number of blades, then the number of blades equals the number of starburst spikes produced.<\/p>\n<p>If the number of blades is uneven, you get double the number of spikes. This means that 9 blades will produce a starburst with 18 spikes. It should be noted there is a starburst filter you can use to create spikes. But it looks better and more natural using a small aperture.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible to produce the starburst effect from street lights and even sunlight. Follow these instructions to be successful with these shots:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Street lights<\/strong>: You need a <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/best-tripods-and-monopods\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tripod<\/a> since narrow apertures and street lights mean a <a href=\"https:\/\/expertphotography.com\/long-exposure-photography-complete-guide\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long exposure<\/a> at night. Experiment with the aperture a little. The smaller the aperture, the longer and thinner the spikes will be.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sunlight<\/strong>: Photographing the whole sun won&#8217;t produce a good starburst effect. The sun will likely overexpose your photo if you&#8217;re aiming at it. It&#8217;s also not good for your eyes unless the sun is nearing sunset. So, finding ways of reducing the amount of sun photographed is best. In other words, find a way of blocking the sun.
